Highlights of 2007: Room service

Paddy Burt picks out a few places that she would gladly revisit.

These are a few of the places we have stayed in during the past year that I would gladly go back to. They are not necessarily "the very best"; they are all different and in different parts of the country.

The Tempest Arms, Skipton, North Yorkshire

On arriving at The Tempest Arms (01282 842450, http://www.tempestarms.co.uk/), near Skipton, North Yorkshire, we were directed to a grey stone building next door. We found ourselves in a large room with a small balcony and a view of a stream. There was a wall-mounted flat television with a digibox and a big squashy sofa from which to watch it. Downstairs the food was on the hearty side and, at breakfast time, the menu said "Good morning - start the day our way."

In charge was Martin, who had the authority of a senior BA steward. "What about the Yorkshire platter?" asked my husband. "Go for it - you can always leave what you can't manage," he replied. "More coffee, anyone?" he asked as he strode around, making sure everyone was happy and, even better, making them laugh.

The picture shown is Suite 14, the room Paddy Burt stayed in.
