Times may be tough for the UK’s pub trade, but the The Tempest Arms has cause for celebration after reaching the finals of the industry’s ‘Oscars’, the Great British Pub Awards, and a chance to win the national title of Best Food Pub, announced next month. Martin and Veronica have much to be proud of already. The Great British Pub Awards, run by drinks industry ‘bible’ the Morning Advertiser, are the ultimate accolade in pub retailing and competition for a finals placing is intense. Following a ‘paper’ judging and a visit from an industry expert, The Tempest Arms has been named as the Best Food Pub in Yorkshire. Along with the seven other regional finalists, Martin and Veronica will be waiting with bated breath for the national winner to be revealed at a glittering Awards ceremony in London on 9th September.
Paul Charity, editor of the Morning Advertiser, said, “It is heartening to find such a wonderful success story when there has been little good news about pubs recently. This is proof that talented, hard-working landlords and landladies can still attract customers wanting to experience the unique atmosphere of the Great British Pub. They thoroughly deserve this public recognition of their achievement.”
The judges were impressed with The Tempest’s outstanding food, commenting, “A great food pub should offer customers high quality and affordable prices, in a traditional pub environment. It is to the pub’s credit that they have achieved this, and created an excellent reputation for their food.” The Best Food Pub category is sponsored by Premier Foods (www.premierfoods.co.uk ), the UK’s largest food producer, whose brands include Hovis, Cadbury, Mr Kipling, Bisto and Sharwoods.
